The Science of Seanol®

Seanol® isn't just another supplement ingredient. It's a marine polyphenol compound extracted from Ecklonia cava
— a rare brown seaweed harvested from the coastal waters of South Korea.
Backed by decades of research, 150+ published studies on Ecklonia cava polyphenols (in vitro, animal, and human), including 7 human clinical trials†, and regulatory notification in the USA and EU with health-functional-food recognition in Korea,
Seanol® works at a cellular level to support the body's natural protective and restorative processes.

Born in the ocean. Built for survival.

Ecklonia cava doesn't grow just anywhere. It anchors to the deep coastal waters of Jeju, South Korea — where intense ultraviolet light, salt pressure, and tidal force test every organism that survives there.

Over millions of years, this brown seaweed developed a defence chemistry that land plants never needed: a family of polyphenols called phlorotannins. They are the seaweed's own immune system — produced in response to oxidative stress. It's the same kind of stress our own cells face every day, from metabolism, UV exposure, and aging.

The quiet irony: the molecule that keeps a seaweed alive in the harshest marine environment is the same molecule that supports resilience in human cells.

The Seanol® Difference

Four properties set Seanol® marine polyphenols apart from anything found on land.

Dual Solubility

Soluble in both water and fat — a property that distinguishes Seanol® polyphenols from most land-based antioxidants.

Purified. Potent.

Purified to remove iodine and heavy metals, Seanol® marine polyphenols help support the body's natural antioxidant defences (lab-studied).

Detected in Brain Tissue

In preclinical research, Seanol® polyphenols have been detected in brain tissue, where they support antioxidant activity.

Potent Radical Scavenging

Laboratory studies have reported free-radical scavenging activity — in-vitro research, not a claim about effects in the body.

What the research shows

Decades of published research — 150+ published studies on Ecklonia cava polyphenols (in vitro, animal, and human), including 7 human clinical trials† — have mapped how marine polyphenols interact with the body’s major systems.

Antioxidant defense

Cells are exposed to oxidative stress over time. Sea polyphenols show antioxidant activity in laboratory studies.

A healthy inflammatory response

Research indicates marine polyphenols support the body’s natural inflammatory balance by modulating key signaling pathways — including NF-κB and the COX/LOX enzyme systems involved in normal recovery and repair.

Brain & cognitive function

In preclinical studies, Seanol® polyphenols have been detected in brain tissue, where they support antioxidant activity. In animal studies, sea polyphenols supported memory — animals retained learned information for longer periods. This is the science behind iSeanol® Brain Supplement.

Skin & collagen support

Marine polyphenols help protect the skin’s structural proteins: they inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) — the enzymes that break down collagen and elastin — and support the extracellular matrix through hyaluronic-acid binding. This is the mechanism behind DermaGel’s non-injectable skin booster and the Seanogen creams.

Muscle recovery & energy

Seanol® polyphenols support muscle recovery after exercise and healthy joint comfort. This is the science behind CelBon Body Cream and SLP8040 Marine Active Gel.

Hair & scalp vitality

The same polyphenols that protect skin cells support the scalp environment — helping maintain healthy follicles and a balanced scalp. This is the science behind the X10 Hair Renewal Solution.

The research behind the numbers

The same ingredient, the same evidence — across every Seanol® product.

Decades

of continuous research

Seanol® is among the most studied marine polyphenols in the supplement category. This is a research record, not a marketing story: 150+ published studies on Ecklonia cava polyphenols (in vitro, animal, and human), including 7 human clinical trials† conducted on Seanol® phlorotannins. Every batch is consistent — from Jeju to your shelf.

Where does Seanol® come from?

Seanol® is extracted from Ecklonia cava, a species of brown seaweed found exclusively in the deep coastal waters off South Korea. Through adaptation to a harsh marine environment, Ecklonia cava developed a unique class of polyphenols called phlorotannins with distinct structural properties compared to their land-based counterparts.

What are phlorotannins?

Phlorotannins are the polyphenol compounds in Seanol®. In laboratory studies they show antioxidant activity, and their structure is what sets them apart — soluble in both water and fat, unlike most land-based antioxidants.

How does Seanol® compare to other antioxidants?

Seanol® marine polyphenols are soluble in both water and lipids, distinguishing them from many land-based antioxidants. Laboratory studies have reported free-radical scavenging activity — in-vitro research, not a claim about effects in the body.

How is Seanol® extracted?

Seanol® is produced through a specialized extraction and purification process that concentrates the phlorotannin fraction of Ecklonia cava while preserving its molecular structure.

Is Seanol® safe?

Seanol® has been notified to the US FDA as a New Dietary Ingredient and to the European Commission as a novel food, and is recognized by Korea’s MFDS as a Health Functional Food (certificate years pending). Safety data from clinical studies on the Seanol® ingredient have been reported; Seanol® is not a medicine — use as directed and consult a healthcare professional if unsure.

Which products contain Seanol®?

Every product in the range — eye care, cognitive support, skin, body, hair, daily vitality and pet formulas — is built on the same marine polyphenol from Ecklonia cava.
